It's a vast undertaking, and there aren't any friendly eagles on hand to cut through its dense mythos. It’s like being asked to review Lord of the Rings. How the heck do you review Dwarf Fortress? Much like the procedurally generated world spat out at the start of every game, there’s already a huge pile of established lore and history out there from the 16 years it’s been around. If you can give it the time and patience it requires, you’ll be rewarded with one of gaming's most intricately detailed and deeply satisfying story generators. The new interface makes it easier to get started, but there’s still a huge amount to learn and the game isn’t great at teaching you. (You read "cados magical journey"? The magic system and more (toady says "wizerdly things") should make bogeys more bearable when that happens. Her has also said "we need to balance" on some occasions too, so take it with a grain of salt. I think bogeymen are plenty !Fun!, but you will find that once you are leveled up a bit they become non-issues.Īlso just because toady nerfs one thing doesn't mean he actually cares about balance, the guy is a mad genius, he does as he wishes and honestly cares more about "realistically" simulating a fantasy world (as realistic as one can make a FANTASY world) and making sure they are inline with folklore, though he has said "we don't do balance" on more then one occasion. You could probably use sneak to better single them out for fighting though. You can apparently sneak around them though, but they seem to actually patrol the area where you encounter them, so I'm not totally sure if you can actually sneak away from them. In the time it takes you to move one tile, a bogeyman can move several or attack multiple times. Outrunning them is pretty much a death sentence. At expert level or something similar, you can chuck a bolt or arrow at them before they close in on you, often damaging one of their legs or an arm so you start the fight with an advantage already. Charge attacks are allegedly really effective against them also since they're pretty small but I haven't tried it much myself.Īn extremely useful trick is to level your thrower skill before venturing out somewhere you might find them. That's true of pretty much every opponent really, but it seems especially effective against bogeymen since they're so freakishly fast. Once they have to crawl around it seems it's far easier to dodge or block their attacks, and they become much worse at dodging your attacks. The trick to beating them is to damage their legs so they fall on the ground. Or at least that's usually what happens to me. They're really overpowered when you first start out, but once your adventurer becomes strong enough you'll find yourself purposefully seeking them out to level your weapon skills since ordinary opponents will pass out and bleed to death if you give them a dirty look.
